I'm exhibiting again! This time, as part of a group show with a bunch of other "expressive figurative artists" in Wellington! I'm all excited. The other bunch of people do some really nice work, I'm stoked to be asked to be part of the show.

For the rest of it, I'll just copy out or press release! Come along to the opening on Tuesday night (3 September, 5.30 to 8 pm). The show is at Matchbox Studios Wellington, 166 Cuba Street - that's about halfway between Garret St and the State Highway. Their website is here: matchboxstudios.co.nz/blogs/ex…

WHY: Vibrant new art by up-and-coming Wellington artists!

A group exhibition by seven up and coming Wellington artists, sharing their unique perspectives on the City, among other facets of modern life.

This exhibition brings together an eclectic mix of expressive representational artists exploring unique approaches to painting and one photographer, with different styles, philosophies and subject matter.

The  fresh, vibrantly colorful artwork betrays influences of the great European artists of the turn of the last century, along with American pop art, comic strips, and computer-generated images.

The themes, however, are distinctly New Zealand: from Wellington street scenes to portraiture, to mythical-surreal, and more conceptual imagery.

Most of the artwork in this show stays with the traditional format of oil or acrylic on canvas, but there is no backward looking stuffiness about these artist's work!

Artwork will be for sale during the show

THE ARTISTS:

Brendan Grant creates exuberant Wellington Scenes that capture the uniqueness of the many different places with a personal style. www.brendangrantartwork.com

David Boyle's art is contrived from his juvenile personae . He never grows up and paints escapist pictures of women on motor bikes in jungles and other silly stuff to help him forget reality under Key and rugbyheadism.  Book Bolting simple censorship and the sculptures are contrived from a Maoist/Freudian leaning he crept into at age nine. boyleswellington.blogtown.co.nz

Maiken Calkoen's paintings are inspired by Wellington and incorporate vibrant colour, panoramic views, strong perspective, and observation of light as distinctive to the season or time of day.  maiken-calkoen.blogspot.co.nz

Michael Edge-Perkins is a Wellington-based, Christchurch-born photographer working in still life and colour abstracts. www.facebook.com/m.edge.perkins

She holds a certificate with distinction in Science Fiction and Fantasy Art from London Art College, and blogs for international geekery online magazine Amazing Stories, as well as on her own website www.starsongstudio.com
